Hazel
Hazel is a happy, non-verbal, energetic 4-year-old who brings so much joy to her family. Following our video interview, Hazel took me by the hand and showed me every corner of her back yard. She talked constantly in a language known only to her with her signature, never-ending smile. I won't ever forget the strength of her grasp and her determination to show me her world.
She was diagnosed two years ago with an incredibly rare and devastating mitochondrial condition — non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (LIAS variation). Hazel’s parents remain steadfast and profoundly grateful for the support of a small group of friends and the ‘Mito’ team at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
This video was produced for the online 2021 Seattle Children's Hospital Mitochondrial Research Guild fundraising event to introduce Hazel and her family and inform the audience of the challenges Mito families face, and encourage donors to help fund research and family grants.
